When Does Psilocybin Appear in the Psilocybe Cubensis Growth Cycle?

When it comes to the study of the magic mushroom growth cycle, mycologists tend to be very careful regarding the amount of sunlight and humidity that the mushrooms might receive, as well as the integrity of the substrate that has to be inoculated. A single jar of shroom spores substrate can typically yield quite a few psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, if they are properly taken care of during their growth cycle. However, how much time do you need to wait and how large do the mushrooms have to be before they start producing psilocybin?

Like all other species of mushrooms, psilocybe cubensis mushrooms have an initial period during which they simply develop as mycelium. Essentially, mycelium is a “fuzzy” white growth that starts to colonize the substrate about five days after you inoculated it. Like magic shroom spores, mycelium doesn’t produce psilocybin just yet, and it can be regarded as more of a stem and root system of a plant. The mushrooms that grow from it are similar to flowers.

It can take up to 15 days or even more, before the mycelium completely colonizes your substrate. After that, it can take about another month for mushrooms to sprout. It is during this time that psilocybin starts to be present in the mushrooms as they grow. Of course, it’s impossible to tell the exact time or the exact size that the mushrooms need to have in order to contain the maximum amount of psilocybin. However, if you took proper care of their growth, you might be able to obtain quality mushrooms containing psilocybin pretty early on.
