Is It Legal to Study Magic Mushrooms and Mushroom Spores in Your Home
Although nobody will stop you from reading about magic mushrooms, the scientific study of psilocybe cubensis mushrooms – which are known to be banned in most parts of the world because of their psilocybin content – does require the presence of the actual specimen. Since the mushrooms themselves are illegal to use or own in many of the 50 US states, researchers typically have to do one of two things: attempt to obtain a license that allows them to legally study the mushrooms, or move to an area where they are not banned.
With mushroom spores, the legality issue is not as problematic. Although not all states recognize it, the status of psilocybe cubensis mushroom spores is not under question at the federal level. That’s because the spores themselves contain no active psychedelic substance, and can be safely stored in a special mushroom spore syringe and refrigerated containers for a long time.
Nevertheless, if you live in Oregon, or if you move to one of the cities where psilocybin has been decriminalized, then you’re pretty much safe to use and study it in the comfort of your own home without being under risk. The cities in question include Denver in the state of Colorado, as well as Ann Arbor, Oakland and Santa Cruz in California. Other cities in Washington State and California are also considering decriminalizing the drug, and some have even voted for the motion in the past.
