Why Are Magic Mushroom Spores in a Grey Legal Zone?

Magic mushrooms, also known as psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, are psychedelic fungi that are still illegal to own and use in many parts of the world – including most of the United States. Psilocybin is a substance that has hallucinogenic and psychedelic properties, as well as certain healing qualities that scientists are just now discovering.

Because of their mind-altering effects, psilocybe cubensis mushrooms are not considered safe to use in certain situations – such as while driving, operating equipment or taking care of young children. As a result, psilocybin is considered a serious drug in most states, and efforts to decriminalize it for recreational use are mostly stagnant.

If used responsibly, however, psilocybin has a huge potential for treating mental health conditions, including severe cases of depression and anxiety. Also, many people use them as part of a practice called “microdosing” which takes the consciousness-altering properties of psilocybe cubensis mushrooms out of the equation, while still ensuring that the minute amounts of magic mushrooms they use can offer certain benefits – such as improved calmness, enhanced cognition, better creative thinking and a more hopeful outlook on life. Research using legally distributed psilocybe spores is ongoing.

Because of these benefits, magic mushrooms are in a gray legal zone, and their the decriminalization could be a possibility in the near future. Some cities in Oregon and California have already made the first steps towards legalizing psilocybin for certain, specific uses.
